AN Sunday Study: Native American Revitalization Part One
October 17, 2021 @ 9:15 am - 10:15 am
We have invited Nancy Wiens, childhood friend of Jenny Rake-Marona, Presbyterian clergy, spiritual director and founder of Emergence Initiatives, to guide us in a thoughtful, prayerful consideration of what it might mean to revitalize relationship with the native peoples of our area. She has been engaged in this work with her Presbytery and the GA for the last year or so. Nancy will invite us to prepare our bodies, minds and souls for engaging in a deeper understanding of the challenges and the hope of this important work. What you might anticipate experiencing, considering, and learning in the 2 sessions with Nancy:
- Learning some history of the land and peoples in Tacoma and your hometown
Introduction to the Doctrine of Discovery and practices of dismantling it. The Doctrine of Discovery is the 15th Century papal edict that authorized European Christian nations to “invade, capture, vanquish, and subdue all…pagans and other enemies of Christ…to reduce their persons to perpetual slavery…and…to take away all their possessions and property” (Pope Nicholas V).
- Presbyterian Involvement in the Boarding School Era
- Spiritual practices to connect with Nature as a concrete way to decolonize our Christian tradition
Sunday 10.17, 9:15-10:30 am “History of the Land and Peoples in Tacoma and your home towns”
Please consider, read, reflect, pray on the following before we meet, as food for body, mind and soul before our time with Nancy on Sunday Oct 17.
What tribe/tribes stewarded the land—gathering from it, singing and praying on it—on which you were born and on which you made the bulk of your income?
