Ash Wednesday Service
February 17 @ 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm
We will be entering the Lenten season February 17. You are all invited to join us for a brief outdoor evening service with ashes at 7 p.m. outside of the church. Masks required, social distancing, bring your own chair, and we will administer ashes with Q-Tips that are disposed of after one use for safety.
For those of you who are cautious about gathering and are being physically distant …. Pastor Tad will be out on the corner of N. 9th and J Street for the Ash Wednesday Blessing and Imposition of Ashes between Noon. and 2 p.m.
Traditionally, the Christian church has observed the seven weeks before Easter as a time of penitence and spiritual self-examination. Ash Wednesday is February 17 this year and will mark the beginning of our Lenten Season. Ash Wednesday derives its name from the ancient practice of marking the foreheads of worshipers with ashes from the unused palm branches of the previous year. Our service will also include the imposition of ashes.
Ashes historically have had a dual significance. First, they are Hebrew Bible symbols of sadness and humility. The second symbolic meaning of ashes is as a reminder of our mortality as our bodies and material possessions eventually will turn to dust and ashes.
