TN@IPC: Lawrence Garrett
September 29, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Lawrence Garrett is a consultant and leadership coach, as well as a diversity, equity and inclusion professional. He is well known in the non-profit and educational communities for his ability in decoding cultural behaviors that either support or undermine values and performance. Lawrence will be leading us in a discussion around the podcast, Seeing White – Scene on Radio – which will offer an historical and governmental lens regarding white supremacy. Please listen to the first 2 before the first meeting. Join us for three Tuesday evenings for what an enlightening conversation.
Host and producer John Biewen set out to take a different kind of look at race and ethnicity, by looking directly at the elephant in the room: white people, and whiteness. White supremacy was encoded in the DNA of the United States, and white people dominate American life and its institutions to this day, and yet whiteness too often remains invisible, unmarked, and unnamed.
On one level, it seems Americans talk about race and ethnicity all the time. The news media always seems to be reacting to the latest racial “incident,” while pundits ponder “race relations” year in and year out. And yet. The premise of this series is that the American conversation about race, and the stories we tell ourselves about race and ethnicity, are deeply incomplete and often misleading. We need new stories and new understandings about our history and our current racial and ethnic reality.
We are asking for a $50 donation to attend these three classes. Scholarships are available. Contact Cindy Caldwell, firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are able please put Adult Nurture on the memo line of your check or the PayPal instruction line.
