SUMMARY:Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Birthday - IPC Closed
DESCRIPTION:“He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.” Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  excerpt from “Stride Toward Freedom.” In it\, King recounted the developments of the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-56.\n \nFor Civil Rights and Social Justice \nMartin Luther King dreamt that all inhabitants of the United States would be judged by their personal qualities and not by the color of their skin. In April 1968 he was murdered by a white racist. Four years earlier\, he had received the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent campaign against racism. \nKing adhered to Gandhi’s philosophy of nonviolence. In 1955 he began his struggle to persuade the US Government to declare the policy of racial discrimination in the southern states unlawful. The racists responded with violence to the black people’s nonviolent initiatives. \nIn 1963\, 250\,000 demonstrators marched to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington\, where King gave his famous “I have a dream” speech. The following year\, President Johnson got a law passed prohibiting all racial discrimination. \nBut King had powerful opponents. The head of the FBI\, John Edgar Hoover\, had him placed under surveillance as a communist\, and when King opposed the administration’s policy in Vietnam\, he fell into disfavour with the President. It has still not been ascertained whether King’s murderer acted on his own or was part of a conspiracy. \nfrom NobelPrize.org\nOn December 10\, 1964 Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and turned his award money over to Civil Rights and Justice organizations.

SUMMARY:Contemplative Singing Circle
DESCRIPTION:The Monthly Contemplative Singing Circle is meeting the first  Saturday of the month\, 10:15a to 11:30a in the Fireside Room.\nAll voices welcome! Friends and family welcome\, too! Together\, we will agree on a regular time to meet going forward. \nContemplative Singing: Singing as a Spiritual Practice\nThere are many ways people tap into their spirituality: prayer\, meditation\, yoga\, chanting\, writing poetry\, journaling\, dance and for some\, singing.  Contemplative singing utilizes a cappella singing to tap into emotions\, fostering joy\, peace\, and connection. While a single individual leads the session\, the song selection comes from attendees as they become aware of what they need to buoy\, heal or soothe themselves. \n\n\nContemplative singing welcomes all voices. Singing is an essential part of being human.  “We are born vocal noise-makers. Someone indicating in any way that another should not sing is violence to the soul.  It robs us of one of our primary forms of expression and communication.” Li Kynvi\, UU Minister & licensed music therapist. \n\nThe ability to read music is not required. At this Adult Nurture session\, we will:\nDiscuss the benefits of communal singing\nEngage in the practice of contemplative singing using the sample song lyric sheets provided\nDetermine specifics to create a monthly contemplative singing practice at IPC

SUMMARY:IPC Stained Glass Restoration Project Presentation & Tour
DESCRIPTION:Are you a person who loves history\, architecture and art? We are a church founded in 1888 in the North End of Tacoma. The congregation in 1909 built a unique and beautiful worship space. In that space are many stained glass windows that in themselves very unique and beautiful works of art. We have had an assessment done on the condition of these windows and have found we are in a precarious situation in how much damage has occurred. If you are interested in finding out more about our windows and/or have ideas on where and who to contact to get funding for this project please stop by and join us on February 16. \nClick here for more information on Scottish Stained Glass Restoration\nClick here for the main group Scottish Stained Glass\n  \n

SUMMARY:Together\, We Rise! Sound Bowls
DESCRIPTION:Are you among the many people stressed out these days\, struggling in a post-pandemic world?  You may be interested in a new monthly offering at IPC called Together We Rise By Lifting Others\, a place to feel safe and heard. A place that’s uplifting\, encouraging\, and non-judgmental. \nFor about an hour once a month\, we’ll meet in the Fireside Room.  After beginning with prayer\, a quote or brief writing will be shared. Anyone who wishes to share with the group may do so.\nIf you have any questions\, contact Danny Lara 253 572.4287 or Beth Prevo 253.906.5696.  We hope to see you there!  Together\, we rise! \nMarch 18: Join Danny Lara and friends for a special evening.  Back by popular demand\, Vince McCord will again make the sound bowls sing and create a very calming atmosphere.  We’ll begin with a discussion about Anxiety\, then Vince will demo the bowls for about 20 minutes.\nFeel free to bring a mat to lay on to relax fully\, if you wish.  Our time together will wrap up at 8 p.m. \n
