SUMMARY:Contemplative Singing Circle
DESCRIPTION:The Monthly Contemplative Singing Circle is meeting the first  Saturday of the month\, 10:15a to 11:30a in the Fireside Room.\nAll voices welcome! Friends and family welcome\, too! Together\, we will agree on a regular time to meet going forward. \nContemplative Singing: Singing as a Spiritual Practice\nThere are many ways people tap into their spirituality: prayer\, meditation\, yoga\, chanting\, writing poetry\, journaling\, dance and for some\, singing.  Contemplative singing utilizes a cappella singing to tap into emotions\, fostering joy\, peace\, and connection. While a single individual leads the session\, the song selection comes from attendees as they become aware of what they need to buoy\, heal or soothe themselves. \n\n\nContemplative singing welcomes all voices. Singing is an essential part of being human.  “We are born vocal noise-makers. Someone indicating in any way that another should not sing is violence to the soul.  It robs us of one of our primary forms of expression and communication.” Li Kynvi\, UU Minister & licensed music therapist. \n\nThe ability to read music is not required. At this Adult Nurture session\, we will:\nDiscuss the benefits of communal singing\nEngage in the practice of contemplative singing using the sample song lyric sheets provided\nDetermine specifics to create a monthly contemplative singing practice at IPC

SUMMARY:Office Closed Labor Day
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1800s\, at the height of the Industrial Revolution in the United States\, the average American laborer worked 12-hour days\, seven days a week\, in order to eke out a basic living. Despite restrictions in some states\, children as young as 5 or 6 toiled in mills\, factories and mines across the country\, earning a fraction of their adult counterparts’ wage \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLabor Day’s Railroad Strike Roots\n\n\nCongress passed legislation in 1894—amid a railroad workers’ strike—to create the holiday honoring labor \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPeople of all ages\, particularly the very poor and recent immigrants\, often faced extremely unsafe working conditions\, with insufficient access to fresh air\, sanitary facilities and breaks. \n\n\nAs manufacturing increasingly supplanted agriculture as the wellspring of American employment\, labor unions—which had first appeared in the late 18th century at the dawn of the labor movement—grew more prominent and vocal. Unions began organizing strikes and rallies to protest poor conditions and compel employers to renegotiate hours and pay. \n\nFirst Labor Day Parade\n\nMany of these events turned violent during this period\, including the infamous Haymarket Riot of 1886\, in which several Chicago policemen and workers were killed. Others gave rise to longstanding traditions: On September 5\, 1882\, 10\,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square in New York City\, holding the first Labor Day parade in U.S. history. \n\n\nThe idea of a “workingmen’s holiday\,” celebrated on the first Monday in September\, caught on in other industrial centers across the country\, and many states passed legislation recognizing it. Congress would not legalize the holiday until 12 years later\, when a watershed moment in American labor history brought workers’ rights squarely into the public’s view. On May 11\, 1894\, Chicago employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company went on strike to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives. \n\n\nOn June 26\, the American Railroad Union\, led by Eugene V. Debs\, called for a boycott of all Pullman railway cars\, crippling railroad traffic nationwide. To break the Pullman strike\, the federal government dispatched troops to Chicago\, unleashing a wave of riots that resulted in the deaths of more than a dozen workers and the arrest and imprisonment of Debs. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Meaning of Labor Day\n\nIn the wake of this violent unrest—and in an attempt to repair ties with essential American workers—Congress passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. On June 28\, 1894\, President Grover Cleveland signed it into law. \n\n\nBut more than a century later\, the true founder of Labor Day has yet to be identified. Many credit Peter J. McGuire\, cofounder of the American Federation of Labor\, while others have suggested that Matthew Maguire\, a secretary of the Central Labor Union\, first proposed the holiday. \n\nLabor Day Celebrations\n\nLabor Day is still celebrated in cities and towns across the United States with parades\, picnics\, barbecues\, fireworks displays and other public gatherings\, especially over the long\, three-day Labor Day weekend. For many Americans\, it represents the end of the summer and the start of the back-to-school season. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nfrom History.com

DESCRIPTION:All members of the campus and community are invited to the Fall 2026 Swope Lecture on Tuesday\, September 29\, at 7:30 p.m. in Schneebeck Concert Hall.  This fall’s Swope Lecturer is Mathew S. SUMMARY:Interfaith Encounters & Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:This quarterly gathering offers a space for people of faith to engage one another in genuine dialogue\, listening deeply and sharing diverse perspectives. People engage one another in a topic of mutual interest and concern\, sharing their perspective on the issue\, and listening deeply to the others’ perspectives. The dialogue is a structured format that enables everyone to hold to their own perspectives\, while listening to their dialogue partners so that they can grow in their understanding of the various perspectives\, and to be challenged in their own views. The purpose is not to change people’s minds\, but to help each partner think more critically\, and seek a common ground that enriches each of the participants. All faith traditions and people of goodwill welcome! \nOctober 15\, 2026 | 7-8:30p\nSt. Charles Borromeo Parish Center\n“Living Justly: Faith\, Scripture & the World We Share” \nRegister Here!\nOctober’s Topic: justice from a faith perspective.\nWhat do religious texts from three different traditions say about justice? How are guided and called to just living? What are we called to do and be at this time in history?
